The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) grew from card-sorting research developed by Esta Berg and David Grant in the 1940s. The classic task presents cards that vary along several dimensions, traditionally including color, form, and number. Participants match response cards to reference cards, and the examiner gives feedback about whether each sort is correct but does not explain the sorting principle.

After the participant demonstrates that the current rule has been learned, the rule changes. The participant must recognize that the old strategy no longer works and discover the new one. This combination made card sorting a major paradigm for studying adaptive behavior and executive function.

Why the Rule Is Hidden

Why Perseverative Errors Have More Than One Possible Cause

Wisconsin Card Sorting Test vs. Task Switching Test

The Task Switching Test also examines changing rules, but the structure is different. In task switching, the correct rule is usually explicitly cued — you know whether to perform Task A or Task B, and the cost is switching between them. In WCST-style card sorting, the rule is hidden — you must infer it from feedback and detect when it changes. This adds concept learning and feedback-based inference. The tasks overlap in cognitive flexibility but are not duplicates.

Is This an Executive Function Test?

WCST performance is widely associated with executive function. That is a reasonable broad description, but executive function is not one single ability. The task combines abstraction, updating, working memory, feedback processing, set maintenance, set shifting, and problem solving, so this page avoids claiming it gives your exact executive-function level. It is better described as a card-sorting paradigm that challenges several executive processes.

What Is a Good WCST-Style Score?

There is no universal online benchmark. A person completing four categories on a 60-trial task cannot be compared directly with someone completing four categories on a different standardized procedure. For personal tracking, compare attempts using the same version.

Can the Test Diagnose ADHD, Dementia, or Brain Injury?
