A Schulte table, sometimes called a Schulte grid, is a square grid containing shuffled numbers. The familiar classic version is a 5×5 table containing the numbers 1 through 25.

The task looks simple: find the numbers in order.

What makes it challenging is that each next target could be almost anywhere in the grid. You must repeatedly search through distractors, identify the next number, move to it, and continue the sequence without losing your place.

Schulte-type tasks have been used in research and training contexts involving attention and visual search. Research using a Schulte table has shown that the task engages multiple processes rather than one isolated ability, including visual search and working-memory demands.

This online version is best treated as a visual attention and search-speed challenge, not a clinical cognitive test.

What Does the Schulte Table Test Measure?

Your completion time reflects a combination of several skills.

Visual Search

You have to locate one target among many competing numbers.

The next target is not predictable from its physical location, so your eyes and attention must repeatedly search the grid.

Selective Attention

You need to focus on the number you want while ignoring all the other numbers that are currently irrelevant.

Sequence Tracking

You must remember where you are in the sequence. Losing track of whether you need 17 or 18 can cost more time than the visual search itself.

Visual-Motor Speed

Once you find the target, you still need to move your mouse, finger, or pointer and select it.

That means your score is not a pure measure of attention. Device size, input method, cursor movement, and motor speed also contribute.

4×4 vs. 5×5 vs. 6×6 Schulte Tables

Grid size changes the difficulty dramatically.

4×4 Grid

A 4×4 table contains 16 targets.

It is a good introduction because there are fewer distractors and fewer numbers to track. Use this mode to learn the task or warm up.

5×5 Grid

The 5×5 version contains numbers 1 through 25 and is the best-known Schulte Table format.

If you want one repeatable personal benchmark, this is the most useful mode to choose.

6×6 Grid

A 6×6 table contains 36 targets.

The larger search field creates more possible locations and keeps you working longer. A 6×6 completion time should never be compared directly with a 5×5 time.

Should You Keep Your Eyes Fixed on the Center?

Traditional Schulte practice often recommends maintaining a relaxed gaze near the center while trying to locate numbers across the grid.

The idea is to discourage a rigid row-by-row search strategy and encourage broader visual awareness.

However, an important limitation applies to an online test:

The browser cannot tell where your eyes are looking unless eye-tracking hardware is being used.

A fast completion time does not prove that you used peripheral vision, and this test does not measure the width of your visual field.

If you want to practice the traditional method, keep your gaze generally central and avoid frantic scanning—but do not treat the result as a medical peripheral-vision measurement.

What Is a Good Schulte Table Time?

There is no universally validated online cutoff for a “good,” “average,” or “elite” Schulte Table time.

Many websites publish benchmark ranges such as 20 seconds, 30 seconds, or 40 seconds for a 5×5 grid, but those numbers can depend on:

  • grid dimensions;
  • cell size;
  • screen size;
  • mouse versus touchscreen input;
  • whether mistakes are penalized;
  • when the timer starts;
  • number font and contrast;
  • previous practice;
  • and the exact layout.

The most meaningful benchmark is your own performance on the same version of the test.

For example, if your clean 5×5 runs gradually fall from 45 seconds to 36 seconds while your error count stays low, that is a clear improvement on this task.

Why Errors Matter

Completion time does not tell the whole story.

If you click the wrong numbers repeatedly, you may be moving quickly without maintaining accurate sequence control.

Compare: 32 seconds with 0 errors versus 29 seconds with 7 errors.

The second result is faster, but it is not necessarily the stronger performance.

When trying to improve, aim for a faster time without increasing mistakes.

Does the Schulte Table Improve Peripheral Vision or Reading Speed?

Schulte tables are widely promoted for peripheral-vision and speed-reading training, but those claims need careful wording.

The task can help you practice finding targets across a visual field and may encourage a broader search strategy. That is not the same as physically expanding your visual field. A Schulte table does not diagnose peripheral vision loss or prove that your field of view has widened.

Likewise, becoming faster at finding numbers does not guarantee equivalent gains in reading speed or comprehension. Reading also depends on language processing, vocabulary, eye movements, prediction, and memory.

Treat this as visual-search practice. If you separately want to measure reading improvement, track both reading speed and comprehension rather than assuming transfer from the grid.

Schulte Table vs. Trail Making Test

The Trail Making Test also asks you to find items in sequence, but the layout and mental demands are different.

A Schulte table uses a fixed grid with numbers arranged inside equally sized cells.

Trail Making Part A scatters numbered targets across an open field. Part B adds alternating numbers and letters: 1 → A → 2 → B → 3 → C

That switching rule makes Part B a more complex cognitive-flexibility task.

Use the Schulte Table when you want a compact visual-search grid. Use the Trail Making Test when you want a sequence-search task with a Part B switching challenge.

How to Improve Your Schulte Table Time

Start with accuracy.

Use a 4×4 grid if 5×5 feels chaotic. Once you can complete it cleanly, move to 5×5 and keep that size as your benchmark.

During a run:

  • keep a relaxed gaze rather than staring intensely at one cell;
  • remember the next target before beginning your search;
  • avoid unnecessary cursor movement;
  • do not restart every time you make one mistake;
  • complete the full table;
  • and compare several runs rather than one lucky layout.

Short sessions are enough. Repeatedly testing while tired can turn useful practice into random searching.
