What Does a Pitch Discrimination Test Measure?
Pitch discrimination is your ability to notice a difference in fundamental frequency between sounds.
If two pure tones are close in frequency, they may sound almost identical. As the gap becomes larger, the difference becomes easier to hear.
This test asks a specific relative-pitch question:
Is the second tone higher or lower than the first?
That is different from identifying the exact musical note, singing it back, or recognizing a melody.

What Are Cents?
A cent is a logarithmic unit used to describe small pitch intervals.

Is This a Relative Pitch Test?
Yes, in a limited sense.
Relative pitch means judging pitch relationships using a reference.
If you hear one tone and then decide that another is higher, lower, or a certain interval away, you are using relative pitch information.
This test focuses on one narrow component: fine pitch-direction discrimination.
It does not test whether you can identify intervals such as a perfect fifth, recognize chord progressions, sing a melody by ear, or reproduce a note accurately.

The clinical/research term often associated with severe lifelong difficulty processing musical pitch is congenital amusia. Amusia is broader than simply missing one or two small pitch differences.
Researchers use multi-part assessment batteries involving melody, pitch, rhythm, memory, and other musical judgments. Pitch-discrimination ability varies continuously.

One lucky guess at a difficult level can make the smallest-correct value look better. One momentary mistake can make it look worse.
Repeat the test on different days before treating one result as your stable level.
What Is a Good Pitch Discrimination Score?
There is no universal browser score that cleanly separates βexcellent,β βaverage,β and βtone deaf.β
Published studies use different tone frequencies, timbres, durations, procedures, and threshold calculations.
Musical experience also matters. Research commonly finds that musicians, as a group, discriminate smaller pitch differences than non-musicians, although individual results overlap.
Instead of relying on one generic cutoff, compare your own results under the same conditions.
If you move from correctly identifying 50-cent differences to consistently recognizing smaller gaps across repeated sessions, that is meaningful improvement on this task.
Does Musical Training Improve Pitch Discrimination?
Musicians often perform better on fine pitch-discrimination tasks than people without musical training.
That relationship makes sense: instrumentalists and singers repeatedly listen for tuning differences, melodic intervals, and intonation.
Training can improve task-specific listening skills, but it is difficult to reduce the difference to one simple cause. People who choose long-term musical training may also differ in prior ability and listening experience.
For practical purposes, focused ear training can make you more familiar with small pitch differences.
Do not expect every improvement to appear immediately after one session.
Why Your Audio Setup Matters
Playback hardware and background noise can affect fine judgments. Use the same headphones, keep the volume comfortable and unchanged, avoid unusual audio effects, and test in a quiet environment.
Consistency matters more than expensive equipment.
Why Can I Hear the Difference but Sing the Wrong Note?
Pitch perception and pitch production are related but separate skills.
You may correctly hear that one tone is higher than another yet struggle to control your voice accurately enough to reproduce the target pitch.
Singing also involves:

- βand practice.
