Does one unusual item become easier to remember simply because it stands out from everything around it?

Take this free Von Restorff Effect Test, also called the isolation effect test. You will study 13 words shown one at a time. Twelve appear in plain text, while one is made visually distinctive with a different size, weight, and color.

What Is the Von Restorff Effect?

The Von Restorff effect is the tendency for an item that differs from surrounding items to receive a memory advantage.

It is also called the isolation effect.

A simple example is a list in which almost every item looks the same except one:

The unusual item may attract attention because it breaks the pattern.

The effect is named after German psychiatrist and pediatrician Hedwig von Restorff, whose 1933 research investigated memory for isolated items within otherwise similar material.

The basic idea has become one of the best-known examples of how relative distinctiveness can influence memory.

Distinctive Compared With What?

An item is not distinctive in isolation.

It is distinctive relative to its context.

A red word in a page full of red words is not visually special.

The same red word surrounded by black words is.

That contextual relationship is central to the effect.

The relevant question is not:

“Is this item unusual in the world?”

It is:

“Does this item differ from the other items in this current set?”

This is why the effect is often described as an isolation effect rather than simply an “interesting item” effect.

Important: Your Test Uses Recognition, Not Free Recall

This distinction matters.

In a free-recall test, people study a list and later try to produce the remembered items without seeing answer choices.

In a recognition test, studied items are shown again among new decoys and participants decide which ones appeared earlier.

Your browser test uses recognition.

That means the most precise wording is:

“recognize the distinctive word”

rather than:

“recall the distinctive word.”

The two memory tasks provide different retrieval support and can produce different patterns.

New Research Shows Recognition Is More Complicated

The common online explanation says that a distinctive item is simply remembered better on any memory test.

Recent evidence shows the story is more nuanced.

A 2026 study examining the Von Restorff effect across free recall, recognition, and source memory found a strong recall advantage for unexpected distinctive words but generally did not find the same isolation advantage in recognition unless recall had occurred before the recognition test.

That finding is especially relevant to this page because your tool is a recognition task.

So if the visually unusual word does not produce a dramatic recognition advantage in your session, that does not mean the classic effect is false.

The retrieval method itself matters.

This is an important improvement over the simplified claim that “standing out always makes an item easier to recognize.”

Why Can Distinctiveness Help Memory?

Several explanations have been proposed.

Differential Attention

An unusual item can capture extra attention because it violates the local pattern.

Distinctive Encoding

The item may receive a representation that makes it easier to discriminate from surrounding material.

Relational Processing

Memory can benefit from noticing both the similarities among ordinary items and the feature that separates the isolated one.

Retrieval Cues

Distinctive features may provide useful cues when trying to retrieve an item later.

Modern theories do not reduce the effect to one simple statement such as:

“bright colors automatically create a stronger memory trace.”

Distinctiveness changes how information is encoded and later retrieved, and the specific test format matters.

Visual vs. Conceptual Distinctiveness

The distinctive word in this test stands out visually.

But isolation can occur along other dimensions.

Examples include:

  • one unusually large word;
  • one item in a different color;
  • one picture among words;
  • one emotional item among neutral items;
  • one unusual category member;
  • one concept that breaks the theme.

These are not necessarily equivalent effects.

Visual salience, semantic novelty, emotion, and category distinctiveness can engage different processing mechanisms.

The broad principle is that difference from context can change memory.

What Does Your Result Mean?

Suppose you correctly recognize the distinctive word and 7 of the 12 ordinary words.

That is consistent with the distinctive item being memorable.

But one item provides almost no statistical stability by itself.

There is only:

one distinctive target

versus

twelve standard targets

A single yes/no result for the isolated word cannot estimate a precise personal “Von Restorff effect size.”

Treat the result as an experiential demonstration.

Why Decoys Matter

Recognition tests need new items.

If the result page showed only the 13 studied words, you could simply select everything.

Decoys force you to distinguish:

“I remember seeing this”

from

“this word merely seems familiar.”

A complete recognition analysis would ideally consider both:

  • hits — correctly selected studied words;
  • false alarms — incorrectly selected new words.

High hit rates are most meaningful when false alarms stay low.

Can Highlighting Improve Studying?

Sometimes—but the popular advice “highlight important information and you will remember it” is too simple.

Distinctive formatting can help an important item stand out.

But if you highlight half the page, nothing is isolated anymore.

The distinctive cue loses its contrast.

Also, highlighting does not replace:

  • active recall;
  • elaboration;
  • practice testing;
  • spacing;
  • understanding.

A useful application is selective distinctiveness:

make a small number of genuinely important elements stand out, then actively retrieve them later.

Von Restorff Effect vs. Serial Position Effect

The Serial Position Effect Test changes memory based on where an item appears.

The Von Restorff effect concerns how different an item is from its context.

An item can therefore be:

  • distinctive but in the middle;
  • ordinary but at the end;
  • distinctive and early;
  • ordinary and central.

The two phenomena can coexist.

They should not be treated as the same memory mechanism.

Does a Bigger Effect Mean Better Memory?

No.

Remembering the isolated word while forgetting several normal words does not automatically mean your memory is superior.

It may simply mean your attention was strongly captured by one unusual item.

Likewise, failing to select the isolated word once does not indicate poor memory.

Your result can change with:

  • attention;
  • word familiarity;
  • test position;
  • strategy;
  • prior knowledge of the effect;
  • and ordinary random variation.
