What Is a Super Recognizer?
A super recognizer — also spelled super-recogniser — is a person with unusually strong ability to identify and remember faces. Face-recognition ability varies widely. Because the new faces act as lures, the test can measure not just how many faces you correctly remember, but also how often you falsely claim to recognize a face you never actually saw.
The UNSW Face Test
Researchers at the University of New South Wales developed the UNSW Face Test specifically to help identify people at the superior end of face-recognition ability, designed to be difficult enough to avoid the ceiling problems that can occur when strong recognizers take easier assessments. Its official FAQ emphasizes that identifying a super-recognizer typically requires consistently high performance across multiple face-recognition tests, not one isolated score.
Why Easy Celebrity Tests Are Not Enough
You may score very highly when recognizing famous actors. That could reflect face-recognition ability, media exposure, cultural knowledge, or familiarity — a person cannot recognize a celebrity they have never seen. That makes famous-face tests useful but limited. Unfamiliar-face tests are cleaner because every participant begins with new identities, which is why this test uses faces you have not seen before rather than public figures.
Different Photos of the Same Face Are Hard

Super Recognition vs. Face Blindness

Super recognition sits at the opposite end of the ability spectrum, but it is not enough to simply reverse a face-blindness questionnaire. Someone can report "I never forget a face" and still perform only moderately on objective tests. Likewise, people may underestimate their own ability. Confidence Is Not Accuracy
A person may feel certain "that is definitely the same person" and be wrong. Another may be cautious but highly accurate. False Positives Matter
A super recognizer should not simply say "I recognize everyone." A typical range means your performance falls within the broad range shown by many people on this task. Strong face recognition means you performed above average and may have a genuine strength in learning faces. An exceptional range means your performance is unusually high, which can make you a candidate for further super-recognizer testing — one result still should not be presented as definitive classification. Use several validated or research-based face-memory and face-matching tasks before drawing strong conclusions.
Why Multiple Tests Are Needed
The official UNSW Face Test FAQ currently states that super-recognizers show exceptional performance across multiple face-recognition tests, including memory and matching tasks. If someone scores extremely high on this old/new memory test, a separate face-matching task, and another independent recognition task, the evidence is stronger than one high score. Testing multiple components also reduces the chance that familiarity with one format drives the result.
Practice Effects
Retaking the same face test can inflate performance — you may remember the identities, the difficult trials, the structure, or the correct strategy. Research sites specifically warn that repeat scores are not used for scientific classification because practice effects can artificially raise performance. Use alternate face sets and avoid immediate retesting for a fair result.
