What Is the Balloon Analogue Risk Task?

The Balloon Analogue Risk Task, commonly abbreviated BART, was introduced by C. W. Lejuez and colleagues in 2002 as a behavioral task for studying risk-taking.

Its basic trade-off is elegant:

each additional pump offers more potential reward and more exposure to loss.

The participant repeatedly chooses between:

Pump β€” pursue more reward

or

Cash Out β€” secure what has already been earned

Unlike a questionnaire asking, β€œAre you a risk-taker?”, the BART observes actual choices inside a controlled reward-and-loss task.

That is why the paradigm has been used extensively in research on decision-making and risk behavior.

Why This Is a Behavioral Risk Task

Self-report and behavior are not the same thing.

Someone may describe themselves as cautious but take aggressive risks in a game.

Another person may enjoy extreme sports yet be conservative with money.

The BART creates an immediate sequence of decisions where the consequences are visible:

  • βœ“a pop destroys the unbanked reward;
  • βœ“stopping protects the current gain.

That gives researchers a behavioral measure of how someone navigates escalating uncertainty.

But it is still one artificial task.

What Does Your Total Banked Score Mean?

Your site reports the total points successfully banked across 10 balloons.

That is a useful game-performance score.

But it should not be treated as a direct standard BART risk score.

Why?

Because total earnings depend on both:

  • βœ“and where the randomly hidden balloons happened to pop.

A highly cautious player may bank modest points reliably.

A more aggressive player may sometimes earn a large total and sometimes lose repeatedly.

The same underlying strategy can therefore produce different total points across short sessions.

Use total banked points as a reward outcome, not a pure personality measure.

How the Standard BART Is Commonly Scored

A widely used research measure is the adjusted average number of pumps.

This is typically calculated from balloons that did not explode.

Why exclude exploded balloons?

Suppose you intended to keep pumping to 40, but a balloon popped at 18.

The observed 18 pumps do not reveal your planned stopping point.

The explosion censored the decision.

The original BART researchers therefore used adjusted pumps as a primary risk-taking index.

Higher adjusted pumping generally represents greater willingness to continue increasing the balloon before voluntarily cashing out.

Your website's 10-balloon points total is different from that research metric.

Both can be interesting, but they should not be described as identical scores.

Why 10 Balloons Create a Noisier Snapshot

The original research paradigm used more trials than this short browser version.

That matters because balloon outcomes contain chance.

With only 10 balloons:

Is There a Best Strategy?

Why Two Sessions Can Give Different Results

The outcome combines decisions with randomness.

You might make the same number of pumps on two balloons and have:

The behavioral choice was identical.

The reward outcome was not.

Across many trials, chance has more opportunity to average out.

Across only 10 balloons, it can remain highly visible.

Can BART Predict Real-World Risk?

Research on the original BART has found associations with some self-reported and real-world risk behaviors.

A behavioral association across a research sample does not mean a short 10-balloon web game can predict whether one person will:
