Match the Method to the Material

Sometimes the subject decides the best format. Maps are naturally useful for geography. Listening matters for music. Reading and producing written language matter for writing. Demonstration and hands-on practice matter for surgery or mechanical repair. Worked examples and problem solving matter for mathematics. This is a stronger learning principle than forcing every topic into one preferred modality.

Learning Preference vs. Ability

Enjoying a format does not mean you are automatically better at it. You may prefer listening but have average listening comprehension. You may dislike reading but be a strong reader. You may love hands-on learning but need written information to remember technical details. Practice testing means answering questions without looking at the solution first. Elaboration means explaining how a new idea connects to something you already know. Your preferred format can be layered onto these methods — for example, visual retrieval practice might involve redrawing a diagram from memory.
