How to Take the Handedness Test
For each activity, choose the option that best matches what you naturally do.
The tasks include familiar actions such as writing, throwing, using scissors, and other everyday manual activities.
Answer based on habit rather than ability.
If you normally write with your right hand even though you *can* write with your left, report the hand you actually prefer.
If you genuinely use either hand for a task without a consistent preference, choose the neutral option.
What Is Handedness?
Handedness is the tendency to prefer one hand over the other for skilled activities.
Most people show a consistent preference for the right hand.
A smaller group strongly prefers the left.
Others show a mixed pattern, using one hand for some tasks and the other hand for others.
Handedness is therefore more informative when measured across several activities than when reduced to one question:
“Which hand do you write with?”
Writing hand is useful, but it does not capture every person's full preference pattern.
Why This Test Uses Several Everyday Tasks
You may write with one hand but open jars, throw a ball, use tools, or perform other actions with the opposite hand.
A multi-item inventory samples that variation.
This approach is associated with the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, introduced by R. C. Oldfield in 1971 and widely used in laterality research.
The original Edinburgh approach asks about preference across multiple manual activities rather than treating one behavior as the entire definition of handedness.
This website uses a simplified 10-task quiz inspired by that general framework.
It should not be described as the official standardized Edinburgh inventory unless its exact items, instructions, response weights, and scoring are identical to the validated instrument.
What Is a Laterality Quotient?
A Laterality Quotient, or LQ, summarizes the direction and strength of hand preference.
On this test:
- ✓strongly negative scores indicate stronger left-hand preference;
- ✓strongly positive scores indicate stronger right-hand preference;
- ✓values closer to zero indicate a more mixed pattern.
The important idea is that handedness has degree.
Two people can both call themselves right-handed while one uses the right hand for every tested activity and the other uses the left hand for several tasks.
Their labels are the same, but their preference strength is not.
Direction vs. Degree of Handedness
Researchers often distinguish two questions.
Direction
Which side is preferred overall?
Left or right?
Degree
How consistently is that side preferred?
Strongly or weakly?
This distinction helps explain why one simple category can miss useful information.
Someone with an LQ near the strong-right end and someone only slightly right of center both receive a broad “right-handed” label, yet their behavior across tasks may be quite different.
That is why your complete score is more informative than the category alone.
How Common Is Left-Handedness?
Left-handedness is a minority pattern, but estimates depend on how handedness is measured.
A major 2020 meta-analysis involving data from more than two million people found that the estimated prevalence changed with the definition used.
Its best overall estimate for left-handedness was approximately 10.6%, while stricter and more inclusive definitions produced somewhat different values.
That variation is important.
“Left-handed,” “non-right-handed,” and “mixed-handed” are not automatically identical categories.
A prevalence number should always be interpreted alongside the method used to define handedness.
Mixed-Handed vs. Ambidextrous
These terms are often confused.
Mixed-Handed or Cross-Dominant
You prefer different hands for different tasks.
For example, you may write with your right hand but throw with your left.
Ambidextrous
In everyday speech, this usually means being similarly capable with either hand for the same task.
True equal skill across many complex tasks is uncommon.
A questionnaire about preference does not directly measure equal performance ability.
Someone can report “no preference” for several activities without demonstrating identical speed, strength, or precision with both hands.
So this test measures preference more than motor equivalence.
Hand Preference vs. Hand Performance
Preference and performance are related but not the same.
You may prefer your right hand for writing because it is more practiced, yet the speed difference between hands on another task may be small.
A Finger Tapping Test measures rapid motor output from each hand.
The Handedness Test asks which hand you naturally choose for daily actions.
One is a behavioral preference questionnaire.
The other is a motor-performance task.
Comparing them can be interesting, but the scores answer different questions.
Does Handedness Tell You Which Side of Your Brain You Use?
Not in the popular “left-brained versus right-brained personality” sense.
Handedness is associated with brain lateralization, and researchers study relationships among hand preference, motor control, and language dominance.
But it is incorrect to say:
right-handed = left-brained logical person
or
left-handed = right-brained creative person.
Both cerebral hemispheres contribute to complex thinking in everyone.
Handedness does not determine whether you are logical, artistic, emotional, mathematical, or creative.
Are All Left-Handed People Right-Brain Dominant for Language?
No.
Language lateralization and handedness are related statistically, but not with a one-to-one rule.
Most right-handed people show left-hemisphere language dominance.
Many left-handed people do too, while atypical or more bilateral language organization is more common among left-handers than right-handers.
That makes handedness useful as one research clue about lateralization, not a direct brain scan.
A quiz result cannot tell you where your language functions are located.
What Causes Left- or Right-Handedness?
There is no single “left-handed gene.”
Research suggests handedness develops through a combination of biological, developmental, genetic, and environmental influences.
Family patterns show that genetics matter, but inheritance is not simple.
Two right-handed parents can have a left-handed child.
Two left-handed parents do not necessarily have only left-handed children.
Prenatal development and other factors also contribute.
The final preference is best understood as a complex human trait rather than one switch controlled by a single cause.
Can Handedness Change?
Core hand preference tends to be fairly stable for most people after it is established.
Specific task preferences can change.
Possible reasons include:

- ✓sports training;
- ✓occupational habits;
- ✓injury;
- ✓pain;
- ✓rehabilitation;
- ✓cultural pressure;
- ✓or learning a new skill with the opposite hand.
Historically, some left-handed children were forced to write with the right hand, which can make writing hand a misleading indicator of natural preference.
That is another reason multi-task questionnaires are useful.
Is Left-Handedness an Advantage?
Not universally.
Some sports create situations where left-handed competitors are less common and therefore less familiar to opponents.
But handedness is not a general advantage or disadvantage across life.
Claims that left-handers are automatically more creative, more intelligent, more accident-prone, or fundamentally different in personality are usually much stronger than the evidence supports.
Your handedness score describes manual preference.
It should not be turned into a personality profile.
Why Your Result Might Be Near Zero
A score near the center does not mean the test failed.
It may mean your preferences are genuinely mixed.
Maybe you:
- ✓write right-handed;
- ✓throw left-handed;
- ✓use either hand for some tools;
- ✓and show only weak preference for other tasks.
That pattern is real information.
Avoid forcing yourself into “left” or “right” simply because those labels are more familiar.
