What Is the Halo Effect?

The halo effect occurs when an overall impression of a person or object influences judgments about more specific attributes.

If someone creates a very positive first impression, we may rate other qualities more favorably even when we have little direct evidence about them.

The same general phenomenon can work in the opposite direction.

A negative impression may cast a horn effect over unrelated judgments.

Halo effects are important because evaluation often feels objective even when several ratings are being pulled together by one global impression.

Edward Thorndike and the Original Halo Research

Psychologist Edward L. Thorndike published the classic paper “A Constant Error in Psychological Ratings” in 1920.

He examined ratings of military personnel across characteristics such as:

  • physique;
  • intelligence;
  • leadership;
  • character.

The ratings of supposedly distinct qualities were correlated more strongly and uniformly than Thorndike believed the real traits justified.

His central observation was that raters seemed unable to evaluate each characteristic independently.

An Important Correction About the Original Study

A larger gap is interesting, but it does not mean you are “more biased than 80% of people” unless validated norms exist.

Are the Rated Traits Truly Unrelated?

The goal is not to eliminate overall impressions completely.

It is to prevent them from replacing evidence.

Does Awareness Eliminate the Halo Effect?

No guarantee.

Knowing about the halo effect can encourage more deliberate evaluation, but awareness alone may not fully remove it.

More reliable strategies involve changing the procedure:

  • rate criteria independently;
  • define criteria before seeing the candidate or product;
  • use behavioral evidence;
  • delay overall judgment;
  • compare the same dimension across candidates before moving to the next dimension.

These techniques reduce opportunities for one global impression to dominate.

Halo Effect vs. Barnum Effect

The Barnum Effect Test concerns accepting broad personality feedback as uniquely personal.
