Most people who type for a living have never actually measured how fast they type. They have a vague sense of it — "pretty fast," "not great," "I hunt and peck a little" — but no real number. That's worth fixing, because typing speed is one of the few cognitive-motor skills you can measure precisely in under a minute, track over time, and genuinely improve with the right kind of practice. Here's what the numbers actually look like, and what's worth doing about them.

What WPM Actually Measures

"Words per minute" sounds simple, but there are two different numbers hiding under that one label, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion.

Gross WPM

This counts every group of five keystrokes (including spaces) as one "word," regardless of whether you typed it correctly. It's a measure of raw motor speed — how fast your fingers can move — with no penalty for mistakes.

Net WPM (Adjusted WPM)

This is gross WPM minus a penalty for errors, usually calculated by subtracting one word for every mistake still present in the final text. Net WPM is the number that actually matters for real-world typing, because a blazing-fast typist who has to stop and fix ten typos per paragraph isn't actually faster than a more careful typist in practice — they're just moving their hands faster.

Typing speed research and large-scale test data (from sites that have logged millions of typing sessions) converge on a similar rough distribution:

  • Under 20 WPM — Beginner. Still relies heavily on looking at the keyboard, or new to touch typing entirely.
  • 20–40 WPM — Below average to average. This covers most casual computer users who type regularly but never specifically trained on it.
  • 40–60 WPM — Above average. Typical for people who type extensively for work — writers, students, office staff — without formal typing training.
  • 60–80 WPM — Fast. Usually reflects either touch-typing training or years of high-volume typing (support agents, transcriptionists, programmers).
  • 80–100 WPM — Very fast. Found among professional typists, competitive typists, and people who've deliberately trained for speed.
  • 100+ WPM — Elite. The realistic ceiling for sustained, accurate typing; competitive typing records go well beyond this, but those are short bursts under ideal conditions, not representative of everyday typing.

Broadly, yes, but the pattern isn't a simple straight line, and cause and effect run in more than one direction.

Children and teens typically type well below adult averages, mostly because of less total keyboard exposure and still-developing fine motor control, not any cognitive limitation. Kids who grow up with heavy keyboard or touchscreen use from an early age (a much larger share of each new generation) tend to reach higher speeds earlier than previous generations did.

Adults in their 20s through 40s generally post the highest average speeds, reflecting both peak fine motor coordination and (for many people) the most cumulative years of regular keyboard use through school and work.

Older adults often show a gradual decline in raw typing speed, which tracks a broader, well-documented pattern of slightly slower fine motor control and reaction time with age. This is a small, gradual effect for most healthy older adults, not a dramatic one — and it's frequently offset by decades of accumulated typing experience and more efficient, practiced movement patterns. Many experienced older typists still comfortably out-type younger, less-practiced ones.

The bigger factor by far is practice volume and technique, not age on its own. Someone who types eight hours a day will consistently out-pace someone who types for ten minutes, at any age.

Typing speed expectations vary a lot by job, and some professions effectively require touch typing to function well:

  • General office / admin work — 40–50 WPM

  • Data entry specialist — 60–80 WPM, often with high accuracy requirements

Court reporters are a useful reality check on what "fast" really means: their extreme speeds come from a completely different input method (steno keyboards that type syllables and phonetic chords, not individual letters), not from superhuman finger speed on a standard QWERTY layout.

Accuracy Matters More Than People Think

It's tempting to chase a bigger WPM number, but accuracy has an outsized effect on real typing throughput. Consider two typists working on the same document:

  • Typist A: 70 WPM raw speed, 85% accuracy — spends significant time going back to find and fix errors.
  • Typist B: 55 WPM raw speed, 98% accuracy — rarely stops, moves through the document almost linearly.

In real, sustained typing (not a 15-second speed test), Typist B often finishes comparable work faster and with far less fatigue, because error correction is expensive: it breaks flow, requires re-reading, and compounds as documents get longer. Some commonly repeated typing advice holds up under scrutiny; some doesn't. Here's what the evidence and expert consensus generally support:

  1. Learn proper touch-typing technique first. Home-row finger placement and typing without looking at the keys is consistently the single biggest lever for people who currently "hunt and peck." This alone often produces the largest speed jump of any single change.
  2. Practice with real, varied text — not just drills. Repeatedly typing the same short phrases builds narrow muscle memory that doesn't transfer well. Practicing with varied, natural sentences (the way our test passages are built) more closely matches real typing demands.
  3. Prioritize accuracy while you're building the habit, then let speed follow. Trying to type fast before your fingers know where the keys are just cements bad habits and errors that are hard to unlearn later. Accuracy-first practice tends to produce faster, more durable speed gains than speed-first practice.
  4. Type regularly, not in occasional long bursts. Short, frequent practice sessions (10–15 minutes most days) generally build motor memory more effectively than one long session per week, which is consistent with how motor skill learning works more broadly.
  5. Check your posture and keyboard position. Awkward wrist angles and poor posture don't just risk strain injuries — they also physically limit how efficiently your fingers can move. This is a genuinely underrated factor.

What doesn't hold up as well: speed-typing "hacks" that promise huge gains in a few days with no real practice, or claims that any single keyboard layout (Dvorak, Colemak, etc.) will dramatically outperform a well-practiced QWERTY typist. Layout differences are real but modest for most people; the technique and practice volume matter far more than the layout underneath it.
